Our Concept
Thank you for joining us Inside Sustainability. Exciting and revolutionary things have been happening in the world of sustainability for many years now. Not too long ago, those stories were largely untold. Today, the media is abuzz with many stories about renewable energy, green building design, and so on.
We applaud this increased coverage, but we feel there’s more to tell. Inside Sustainability takes you deeper into the stories than most media go, introducing you to fascinating new concepts, and the incredible people working to bring these ideas to reality.
Few stories of our time are more important than that of the human sustainability effort. We’ll work hard to be sure this story is heard.
The Host / Producer
James Rea produces and hosts Inside Sustainability. His formal involvement with the ideas of sustainability began in 1996 at the US EPA’s Design for the Environment (DfE) Program. DfE was a path-breaking concept in the movement away from end-of-pipe environmental controls, and towards the idea that environmental considerations need to be considered in the earliest design phases of a product or project.
While at the EPA, James began to see all the incredible activities and ideas that were bubbling up in the realm of sustainability. And yet, despite all the activity, the general public remained largely unaware of the exciting potential being developed. Determined to change that, James left the DfE Program to become an independant reporter/producer in public radio.
Most of James’s radio work was done for WAMU 88.5 FM, one of Washington, DC’s NPR affiliates. While there, James covered such topics as Green Chemistry, Green Building Design, Sustainable Agriculture, Smart Growth, and Natural Capitalism.
By 2001, the audio and video potential of the internet was coming into its own, and James saw a chance to move his production skills to the web. He founded SiteStories, a web media production firm. SiteStories creates work on commission for select clients, and also produces original programming for the web. The ideas of Sustainability form a key focus of SiteStories’ work, and it is from this focus that Inside Sustainability was born.
